Why do dogs in China have wild haircuts, dyed hair, and wear little shoes?

A typical dog from a Chinese city looks like a 4-legged Paris Hilton. Poodles, Pomeranians, Silky Terriers, and other pets sport funky hair styles and the latest fashion accessories. Chinese women seem particularly crazy about adorning their little furry friends. Why do Chinese lavish so much attention on their dogs?
